Big Red fall on late Wooster goal

After 85 minutes of scoreless soccer the College of Wooster broke through when Kate Kiley chipped in a rebounded ball off the crossbar, sending the Fighting Scots past Denison in the semifinals of the 2008 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

Denison came out strong in the first half, outshooting the Scots 7-4.  In the 33rd minute Maggie Hoskin had a good scoring opportunity turned away by Wooster goalkeeper Sara Flannelly.  Just eight minutes later Hoskin would get another scoring chance, only to have her shot bang off the cross bar.

With just over five minutes to play in regulation Wooster's Bri Fulmer sent a shot into the goal area from roughly 30-yards out.  As Denison's goalkeeper Courtney Cobb backpedaled to get into position to make a leaping save, the ball hit the crossbar and hit the turf where Kiley was there to give the Scots the win.

Wooster ended up leading the match in total shots 9-8.  DU took four corner kicks and posted three saves, two of which went to Cobb and the last was awarded to the team after a nifty sliding save by senior defender Molly Ruano.  Wooster's Flannelly had one save and took one corner kick.

The Big Red move to 14-4-1 overall while Wooster improves to 14-5-0.  The Scots will take on No. 2 seed, Wittenberg on Saturday night after advancing 4-2 on penalty kicks against Allegheny in their semifinal.  The conference tournament championship match will take place in Springfield.  The Big Red, who are hoping to earn their 12th NCAA Tournament berth, will await word from the NCAA selection committee on Monday (Nov. 10).
