Wooster edges Denison in regular season finale

Julie DeanAt late rally by the 12th-ranked Denison women's soccer team fell short as the College of Wooster left Granville with a 2-1 victory in the 2008 regular season finale. Junior Julie Dean scored the lone goal for the Big Red.

The Fighting Scots struck first in the third minute when Taryn Higgins found Kate Kiley streaking down the field. Kiley settled the pass from Higgins and shot the ball past a challenging Courtney Cobb to give Wooster an early 1-0 lead.

The Big Red had a chance to tie the game with time winding down in the opening half. Junior Anna Rusch unloaded a shot that was blocked right in front of the net by a Wooster defender. The ball deflected back to freshman Lauren Farell but the first-year's shot sailed just over the cross bar.

DU continued to push the pace in the second half generating an early scoring chance when Dean headed a senior Sarah Ash corner kick towards the goal. However, another great play by a Fighting Scot defender kept the shot from going in.

Wooster increased their lead in the 65th minute when Liz Mott weaved through the Denison defense and unleashed a shot past Cobb into the lower right corner of the goal. The goal gave the Fighting Scots a 2-0 advantage.

The Big Red cut the lead in half with just under five minutes left in the contest when junior Laura Kuehn sent a cross that was headed in by Dean. The score was Dean's second of the season.

DU held a slim 11-10 advantage in shots while Wooster attempted eight corners to the Big Red's six. Cobb finished the night with five saves while senior Sara Flannelly and the Wooster defense combined for five stops.

Denison falls to 14-3-1 and 7-1 in the NCAC while Wooster improves to 13-5 and 5-3 in the conference.
