Denison Clobbers Randolph-Macon
It took a little persistence but the 9th ranked Denison Big Red cracked through the Ohio Northern defense in the 62nd minute. They would add a necessary insurance goal in the 87th minute of play to improve their record to 5-1 overall after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Polar Bears on Wednesday afternoon.
Denison's first score came when senior forward Jessie Birdwhistell (right) slipped past a ONU defender and poked the ball past Polar Bear keeper Barbie Krieger for her first goal of the season. The score would remain 1-0, advantage Big Red until the waining minutes when sophomore Julie Dean netted her second goal of the season off a cross by freshman Jenn Clemmer. Denison didn't have much time to celebrate their two goal lead when just over one minute later, ONU's Angie Pisut cleaned up a rebounded shot by Stacey Barnhart that resulted in a Liz Gillette save.
With just 1:04 left on the clock the Denison defense held off the Bears for the 2-1 non-conference win. Denison outshot Ohio Northern 18-11 and out-cornered them 8-2. Gillette posted six saves in goal for Denison as she improved her personal record to 5-1. Krieger saved three shots for ONU.
In the latest NSCAA/adidas Division III top-25 coaches poll the Big Red moved from 10th to 9th following victories over #13 Washington and Lee and Randolph-Macon. Denison's next match is Saturday, Sept. 15 when they travel to Alliance, Ohio for a 1:30 p.m. match against Mount Union.
