Denison Clobbers Randolph-Macon
Sophomore Anna Rusch (right) posted her first career hat trick as the 10th ranked Big Red handed Randolph-Macon an 8-1 defeat in Lexington, Va.
The last time a Denison team scored eight goals in a single contest was Nov. 1, 2003 in an 8-0 victory over Hiram College. In fact, Rusch's hat trick was the first by a Denison player since Colleen Wirtz netted four goals in a win over Earlham College in 2004.
Rusch may have had the biggest day offensively but freshman Jennifer Clemmer had an outstanding weekend. The rookie forward scored the game-winning goal in Denison's 1-0 victory over 13th ranked Washington & Lee on Saturday and returned with the match's first goal in the ninth minute on Sunday.
Rusch would follow in the 22nd minute when she scored off an assist by freshman Kim Oshita. Two minutes later Randolph-Macon would get on the scoreboard thanks to an Ashley Malinowski goal but DU would put two more unanswered goals on the board off the feet of Sarah Ash and Kate Pfeffer to take a 4-1 lead in the the intermission.
In the second half Denison would attempt 17 of their season-high 43 shots with Clemmer, Rusch twice and Maggie Hoskin all scoring goals to set the final at 8-1. Sophomore Julie Dean and Hoskin also chipped in with assists for the Big Red.
Denison's goalkeepers Liz Gillette and Courtney Cobb split time in goal as Gillette handled the first half and Cobb took the second half. Denison outshot the Yellow Jackets, 43-1 and outcornered them 6-0.
Denison's next match will be Wednesday, Sept. 12 when they travel to Ada, Ohio for a 5 p.m. match with Ohio Northern University.
