Big Red Clinch NCAA Berth

The Denison University women's soccer team has earned their 10th berth in school history to the NCAA Tournament and will travel to Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio to face Transylvania (Ky.) University this weekend.

NCAA LogoWittenberg, the winner of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, is the host site for the four-team first and second round. They will face Otterbein College, the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season champion following the Denison-Transylvania match.

The winner of the Denison-Transylvania match will meet the winner of the Wittenberg-Otterbein match the following day.

This marks the 10th trip to the NCAA Tournament for the Denison Big Red women's soccer program and the eighth in 10 seasons under head coach Gail Murphy. The Big Red advanced to the 2005 NCAA Quarterfinals before falling to eventual national runner-up, The College of New Jersey, 2-1.

DU returns an experienced group of five seniors that have advanced to the NCAA Tournament in three of their four seasons in Granville. They are led in scoring by senior midfielder Tammy Hoch (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickley Academy) who has nine goals. Sophomores Lauren Going (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) and Sarah Ash (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) both have eight goals on the year. Denison heads into the tournament with a 14-4-1 record

Transylvania, winners of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, takes a 16-1-0 record into their first NCAA Tournament in school history. The Pioneers defeated Mount St. Joseph 3-1 in the HCAC finals on Saturday.

In the other first round pairing, Otterbein (15-2-3) and Wittenberg (14-3-3) are both familiar foes for the Big Red. Denison defeated Wittenberg, 2-0 on Oct. 11 and suffered a 1-0 loss to the Tigers in the NCAC Championship game on Saturday. In last year's NCAA sectional Denison advanced past Otterbein in penalty kicks, 4-3 to reach the NCAA Quarterfinals. This year, the Cardinals defeated the Big Red 1-0 in Granville on Sept. 20.
