Late Goal Pushes Witt Past DU in NCAC Championship

Wittenberg's Amy Meige broke what had been 82 minutes of scoreless soccer and her goal would prove to be enough as the Tigers held on for a 1-0 victory over the Denison Big Red in the championship of the 2006 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

The two teams played even soccer throughout the 90 minutes of play with Denison taking 11 shots with six going on-goal. The Tigers finished with 10 shots and had five on-frame. Meige's goal in the 82nd minute came off a rebound in the box.

Six different players took shots for the Big Red while Suzanne Medwid led Wittenberg with four shots. Big Red goalkeeper Liz Gillette finished with four saves. Meghan O'Rourke posted six saves for Wittenberg.

The Tigers (14-3-3) will receive the NCAC's automatic qualifier into the 2006 NCAA Tournament. Denison, who falls to 14-4-1, will have to hope for an at-large berth from the selection committee. DU has advanced to the NCAA Tournament nine times with seven trips coming under head coach Gail Murphy's tenure. Last year they advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals with postseason victories over Frostburg St., DePauw and Otterbein.
