Big Red Blast Hiram 7-0

After two consecutive scoreless matches the Big Red women's soccer team took out their frustrations against Hiram College to the tune of a 7-0 victory to close out the 2006 regular season on Saturday at Twinsburg High School.

Denison, who improves to 5-2-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference with the win, will travel to #1 seed, Kenyon College on Wednesday, Nov. 1 for the semifinals of the NCAC Tournament at 2pm sharp.

Against the Terriers Denison got two goals from first-year Anna Rusch and two goals from sophomore Lauren Going to lead DU to the shutout victory. Lisa Nowack also chipped in with her second goal of the season while Sara Ash and Kim Cochran rounded out the goal scoring.

Nowack's goal in the 8th minute off an assist by Katie Eckenhoff gave Denison a 1-0 lead. Rusch would follow that up 11 minutes later off an assist by Molly Ruano. Rush netted her second goal in the 35th minute and just 25 seconds into the second half Going went one-on-one with Hiram goalkeeper Eileen McIver and sent the ball past her for her sixth goal of the season.

Going would then find Ash off a cross in the 49th minute to put DU up 5-0. Two minutes later Laryn Kovalik crossed the ball in to Going who sent another shot past McIver running her season total to seven. The final goal came in the 53rd minute when Eckenhoff bent a corner kick into the box Cochran headed the ball into the net, setting the final score at 7-0.

The match was delayed for 30 minutes due to hail and lighting in the area.

DU outshot the Terriers 18-2 and took nine corner kicks to Hiram's four. DU improves to 13-3-1 overall while Hiram falls to 3-15-1 and 1-7 in the NCAC.
