Denison Shuts Out Oberlin
The Big Red rebounded from their only North Coast Athletic Conference defeat of the season on Thursday night with a convincing 3-0 win over visiting Oberlin College at Barclay-Thomsen Field.
The Denison offense asserted themselves very early as senior Kristen Matthews (left) corralled a loose ball off a corner kick and scored the match's first goal just 1:15 into the match.
In the 34th minute senior midfielder Tammy Hoch, the team's leading goal scorer in 2006, broke a three-match scoreless streak with her ninth goal off a corner kick assist by Katie Eckenhoff. Two minutes into the second half sophomore Lauren Going headed in a goal off a free kick taken by Kim Cochran, setting the final score at 3-0.
Denison dominated taking 34 shots while limiting the Yeowomen to just three scoring attempts. DU took 19 corner kicks and Oberlin was shutout in that category. Oberlin goalkeeper Lindsay Scholl recorded 16 saves on the night and Denison's Liz Gillette finished with one save in 83 minutes of action.
DU improves to 12-2 overall and 4-1 in the NCAC. They will gear up for a key conference match-up on Saturday against Kenyon College. The match begins at 1 p.m. and will be played on the Ladies' pitch in Gambier.
