Denison Falls to Wooster

According to regional rankings, the Denison-Wooster match-up should be a battle until the end. The rankings held true as the 2nd ranked Big Red and the 7th ranked Fighting Scots battle down to the wire. A Wooster header by Winnie Adrien, making the score 2-1, with just 6:53 remaining in the contest proved to be the game winning goal in what was a rough, hard fought conference game.

Wooster drew first blood in the second half off a free kick in the 63rd minute. The free kick was volleyed by Simone Disalvo who put the ball in the back of the net. Wooster looked poised to make another run as they were threatening the Big Red in the box until Denison turned the table on the Fighting Scots. DU countered quickly and served up a perfect pass to a sprinting Lauren Going who got just enough on the ball to get it past the Wooster goalie as she was being pinched between two defenders.

However, much like Denison did, Wooster came roaring back. The Fighting Scots were threatening when DU goalie Liz Gillette came out to contest a Wooster player and deflected the ball out of bounds resulting in a corner kick. This is what set the stage for Adrien's winning goal. The corner was served up perfectly and many players had a chance at it, but Adrien was able to make solid contact and send Denison to their first conference loss.

Gillette and Wooster goalie Staci Alavio both accounted for three saves on the day. The loss puts the Big Red at 11-2 overall and 3-1 in the NCAC. The Big Red will hope to get back to their winning ways when they host another conference foe, Oberlin in a make-up game on Thursday, October 19th.
