Denison Shuts Out Ohio Wesleyan
It may have taken 54 minutes for the DU offense to rear its head on Tuesday night versus perennial rival Ohio Wesleyan but when Lauren Going's (left) shot attempt beat Bishop goalkeeper Ali Gary nine minutes into the second half and broke a scoreless tie, ultimatley putting the pedal to the metal and the Denison offense into overdrive.
Denison was outshot 4-1 in the opening half of play but came out firing after the intermission, outshooting OWU 10-2 over the final 45
minutes of play. The score remained 1-0 until a save by Big Red keeper Liz Gillette (right) resulted in a DU score in transition. Gillette played the ball down field where it was won by Ashley Fairhurst who sent the ball up the right side where it was received by Sarah Ash who wound up scoring from 15-yards out, giving Denison a 2-0 lead with 13 minute left to play.
DU would add a third goal in the 86th minute off a Going assist to Tammy Hoch who banged in her team-high eighth goal of the season.
Gillette and Gary both finished with two saves in 90 minutes of action. It marked Gillette's fourth shutout of the season and the fifth overall for the team in 2006. DU took four corner kicks and held OWU to just one. Denison also outshot the Bishops 11-6.
DU is currently ranked 10th in the latest NSCAA/adidas Division III top-25 poll and are second in the Great Lakes regional rankings. Ohio Wesleyan is ranked 10th regionally.
