Early Goal Enough as Denison Blanks Carnegie Mellon
The seventh ranked Big Red women's soccer team scored in the game's 12th minute and kept the pressure on throughout the 90 minutes of play, resulting in a 1-0 victory over visiting Carnegie Mellon University at Barclay-Thomsen Field.
DU struck early in the contest when Jessie Birdwhistell (pictured left) played the ball from the right side of the field and served up a nice chip shot that bent away from CMU goalkeeper Christie Adams and into the left corner of the goal. It was Birdwhistell's fifth goal of the season which is second best on the squad.
The Big Red put eight shots on goal and outshot Carnegie Mellon 16-2. Adams finished with seven saves for the Tartans and DU goalkeeper Liz Gillette recorded her third shutout of the season.
The Big Red took six corner kicks to Carnegie Mellon's two. Denison improves to 8-1-0 while CMU falls to 3-3-1.
