Denison Edges Out Mt. Union in Final Minutes

Denison's women showed why they were the 2005 NCAA Quarter-Finalists today with a late surge in the closing minutes to edge out visiting Mt. Union. Sophomore Sarah Ash scored what proved to be the game winner in the 88th minute and helped boost her to team to a 3-2 victory and a 7-0 record.

Despite dominating time of posession and ball control, Denison never held the lead until the closing minute. Mt. Union jumped out to an early lead when Courtney Frederick slipped a break-away one-on-one goal past junior goalkeeper Liz Gillette at the 2:50 mark. However, Denison quickly evened the scored when sophomore Sarah Ash converted one of her two goals on a corner kick attempt.

The score remained tied for the rest of the half and into the second half until Mt. Union would take the lead again at the 55:24 mark off a well placed direct kick from Jenn Scrimenti. Denison continued to be offensive and had many solid attempts at their opponents net, however Mt. Union goalkeeper Seana Kelly closed the door on seven of their second half attempts.

Persistance seemed to pay off in the closing minutes when senior Tammy Hoch chipped in the tying goal off of a rebound at the 87:10 mark. Denison then continued their momentum and with the score tied and time running down Sarah Ash received the ball just outside the box, turned, and fired what proved to be the game winner with just 1:20 left in the contest.

Mt. Union's goalie played exceptionally well and kept her team in the game by denying 13 of Denison's best attempts. While Liz Gillette finished the day with one save and two goals allowed in 90 minutes . DU outshot Mt. Union 26-5 and took 12 corner kicks and held their opponents to Zero.

Ash led Denison with seven shot attempts while Hoch had six.
