Hoch's OT Goal Sends Big Red Past Case
Tammy Hoch’s goal in the third minute of overtime ended a thrilling come from behind game against Case Western Reserve giving the sixth ranked Big Red a 2-1 victory.
The first half of the game was played heavily on the Denison offensive side of the field. The Big Red made many threats on goal, fourteen shots in the first half, but none that found the back of the net. The game remained scoreless at halftime.
In the second half, Case Western would break the scoreless tie when Bridget Mason scored in the 52nd minute of the game. Following Mason’s goal, the Big Red again kept the ball on the offensive side of the field but could not notch a score. Not until the 84th minute when Junior Jessie Birdwhistell scored to tie the game at 1-1. Birdwhistell’s goal came off an assist by fellow Junior Kia Anderson. In the last fifteen seconds of regulation the Big Red had a frenzy of shots on goal, two grazing off the crossbar, but to no avail.
The Big Red took immediate control of the action in overtime and much like the rest of the game, Denison’s offense created some quick scoring threats. In the 93rd minute, Anderson would come up big again for the Big Red as she lobbed a perfect corner kick which found Hoch, who headed in the game winning goal.
DU goalie Liz Gillette finished the night with one save and one goal allowed in just over 93 minutes of play. CWRU goalkeeper Nikki Frankenstein recorded nine saves for the Spartans.
Just a testament to the control the DU offense had during the game, the Big Red not only out-shot Case 26-4, but also attempted 13 corner kicks to Case’s zero. Hoch led the Big Red with five shot attempts, while Birdwhistell and sophomores Sarah Ash and Lauren Going attempted four shots.
