Denison's Offense Storms Over Guilford
There certainly doesn't seem to be any early season rust on the wheels of the Denison offense. The eighth-ranked Denison Big Red women's soccer team scored six goals for the second straight day en route to a 6-1 triumph over Guilford College in the second day of the Big Red/Battling Bishop Invitational at Ohio Wesleyan University.
DU poured on the pressure early by scoring five first half goals and netting two goals in the opening nine minutes of action. Kristen Matthews got things going when she scored the contest's first goal off a cross from Lauren Going at the 6:59 mark. Senior Anne Young answered with her first goal of the season at 8:19.
In the 20th minute Matthews would score again, this time off a cross from midfielder Tammy Hoch. Hoch, who scored one goal on Saturday against Olivet, would find the back of the net two more times on Sunday. Both Hoch goals in the 36th and 52nd minutes where assisted by Kim Cochran. DU's other goal was scored by Laryn Kovalik midway through the first half.
Junior goalkeeper Liz Gillette finished the day with three saves and one goal allowed in 90 minutes. DU outshot Guilford 29-6 and took three corner kicks to Guilford's zero.
Young led Denison with five shot attempts while Hoch, Matthews and Sarah Ash both had three apiece. DU went 2-0 at the Invitational and outscored their opponents 12-1 and outshot them 58-6.
