Denison-Wooster Women’s Soccer Tilt Ends in Tie

Anne YoungOctober 26, 2005: The Big Red put a goal on the board early and continued to pepper Wooster goalkeeper Kate Kiley with shots throughout the 110 minutes of play but when the final horn sounded The College of Wooster and the Denison Big Red women’s soccer teams had played to a 1-1 tie.

With the tie in the books, Denison remains unbeaten in North Coast Athletic Conference play in 2005 and has secured the sixth conference championship in school history. Their six NCAC regular season titles tie them with Allegheny for second-place among NCAC schools. Saturday’s opponent, Ohio Wesleyan, is the leader with eight conference championships since 1984.

Junior Anne Young (above) scored DU’s lone goal in the 18th minute when she booted in a mishandled cross off the foot of Kia Anderson. The score would remain in Denison’s favor until the 73:48 mark when Wooster’s Sarah Schostarez scored off assists by Kerry Melenovsky and Erin Lustic.

Denison would go on to attempt four shots in overtime and over the course of the match would outshoot Wooster, 22-6. Big Red keeper Liz Gillette had three saves while Kiley had seven for Wooster.

Wooster’s record moves to 9-5-3 overall and 4-2-1 in the NCAC. They are still very much in the race for a spot in the upcoming conference tournament. Denison’s record moves to 12-2-3 overall and 6-0-1 in league play. They will host the Battling Bishops on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. in the season finale. The NCAC tournament will get underway next Wednesday, Nov. 2, with a semifinal match at Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville.
