Big Red Remains Unbeaten in NCAC

October 19, 2005: The Denison women’s soccer team scored twice off corner kicks held off a late Kenyon charge to win 2-1 in a battle of conference unbeatens at Barclay-Thomsen Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Denison senior All-American Colleen Wirtz (top left) put Denison up early when she scored her seventh goal of the year in the 22nd minute. The ball found the back of the net after Kim Cochran took the corner where it was headed by Tammy Hoch (right) to Wirtz, breaking the scoreless tie.
The match would remain 1-0 in favor of Denison until the 58th minute when Kenyon’s Amy Kessler scored her fourth goal of the year. The scoring sequence developed when Kenyon’s Nora Cole took a shot from inside the box that was blocked by DU goalkeeper Liz Gillette (lower left) After the ball went off the hands of Gillette, Kessler was there to tie the match at 1-1.
It didn’t take long for the Big Red to respond. On the second of two straight corner kicks, Hoch headed in her third goal of the year off the foot of Kia Anderson.
With 1:43 left in regulation Kenyon had an opportunity to force overtime when Amanda Drummond headed a ball in front of the net but it was saved by Gillette, which led to the team’s 11th victory of the season.
Denison outshot Kenyon 18-12 and took eight corner kicks to their five. Rosie Davis led Kenyon with 10 saves in goal. Gillette posted four saves in the match.
The Big Red improve to 11-2-2 overall and are 5-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Kenyon falls to 9-4-1 and 4-1 in conference play. DU will be back on the home turf on Saturday when they host Allegheny College at 1 p.m.
