#4 Big Red runs shutout streak to five with win at Earlham

October 12, 2005: On Tuesday the Big Red women’s soccer team moved from sixth in the NSCAA/adidas Division III Top-25 to fourth overall and on Wednesday the squad earned their 10th victory of the season, defeating conference opponent Earlham College, 2-0.
The Big Red peppered Earlham goalkeeper Karie Wilder Romans all afternoon and managed to score early on placing the pressure squarely on the shoulders of the Quakers. Junior Anne Young (top eft) scored via a penalty kick in the 10th minute of the contest, putting Denison up 1-0. The goal was Young’s third of the year.
Despite a number of scoring attempts by the Big Red offense, the score would remain 1-0 in favor of Denison until the 78th minute when senior Colleen Wirtz (top right) scored off a corner kick that was assisted by Kim Cochran.
Over the course of the 90 minute match, Denison (10-2-1) took 24 shots compared to just three for Earlham (6-6-1). Wilder Romans finished with 12 saves in goal for the Quakers. Denison goalkeeper Liz Gillette (left) did not post a save but earned her eighth shutout of the season.
Denison’s #4 national ranking ties for the highest ranking this year for head coach Gail Murphy’s squad. The team was ranked fourth in the Sept. 20th NSCAA poll after defeating then #5, Washington (Mo.). Denison’s next match will be on Saturday when they host Ohio Dominican at 1 p.m
