Denison Offense Scores Big Against Hiram

Anne YoungAshley FairhurstOctober 8, 2005: The sixth ranked Denison women’s soccer team rolled to a 6-0 victory over visiting Hiram College on Saturday afternoon at a soggy Barclay-Thomsen Field.

With the first half played through a steady rain, Denison took a 1-0 lead into the break thanks to Anne Young’s second goal of the season.

In the second half DU poured on the offensive pressure, scoring five total goals, with four coming in a 12 minute span. The first goal of the second half came just four minutes after the intermission when Ashley Fairhurst scored off an assist by Sarah Ash. The score would remain 2-0 in favor of Denison until the 73rd minute when the offensive onslaught would take place.

Maureen YoungMeghan PolovickThe first of four quick goals came via Maureen Young off a Lisa Nowack feed. Meghan Polovick got in the scoring column for the second time this season, giving DU a 4-0 lead and seniors Colleen Wirtz and Megan Rounsville completed the Denison scoring summary, finding the back of the net less than one minute apart from each other in the 85th minute.

DU outshot the Terriers 45-1. Liz Gillette and Elyse Akhbari combined for the team shutout in goal. Hiram keeper Amy Collett had a busy afternoon as she recorded 19 saves.

Denison improves to 9-2-1 overall while Hiram falls to 2-10-1. The next match for the Big Red will be on Wednesday when they travel to Richmond, Ind. For a 4 p.m. contest against Earlham College.
