Three Second half Goals Power #1 Messiah Past #4 Denison

Tammy HochSeptember 24, 2005: In a clash between the nation’s #1 and #4 ranked team’s the Big Red struck first but top-ranked Messiah had the final say as the Falcons tacked on three second half goals en route to a 3-1 victory over the Big Red in women’s soccer on Saturday at Barclay-Thomsen Field.

Denison junior midfielder Tammy Hoch scored her second goal of the year in the 16th minute off an assist from Kim Cochran, putting Denison up 1-0. The Big Red would hang on for the next 33 minutes but Messiah All-American Annie Futato tied the contest in the 49th minute when she scored off a feed from Stef Rowe.

Futato would strike again in the 61st minute when she beat Denison keeper Liz Gillette for her team-best sixth goal of the season. Rowe would tack on the final score of the day off an assist by Futado less than three minutes later to set the final score at 3-1.

Messiah took 11 shots on the day while the Big Red took five. Messiah goalkeeper Cassie Grose recorded three saves in 90 minutes while Gillette stopped five Falcon shots. Denison took the game’s lone corner kick.

Denison falls to 6-2 with the loss while Messiah improves to 5-0. The match was the fourth against a nationally ranked opponent for Denison in 2005.
