Denison Shuts Out 5th Ranked Washington University
September 18, 2005: The sixth-ranked Denison University women’s soccer team stormed into St. Louis for a battle with sixth-ranked Washington University and a Big Red goal five minutes into the contest wound up being the difference as DU prevailed 1-0 in a clash between two national powers.
The match’s lone score was netted by first-year Maureen Young off an assist by senior Colleen Wirtz in the fifth minute. Following the goal, the Big Red controlled the tempo of the game and limited the Bears to just four shot attempts.
Sophomore goalkeeper Liz Gillette picked up her fourth shutout of the season. The performance also ran Denison’s opponents’ scoreless streak to 287 minutes dating back to September 10th against Otterbein. Denison’s last three victories against Capital, John Carroll and Wash U have been shutouts.
Denison out shot the Bears 6-4 and took five more corner kick attempts, winning that category, 6-1.
The Big Red improve to 6-1 overall with the win but the schedule doesn’t get any easier. On Saturday the nation’s second ranked team, Messiah College (Pa.) will roll into town on a four game winning streak. The last time these two teams met was last October when Denison was ranked seventh in the nation and Messiah was ranked third. The Falcons prevailed 2-1.
