Four First Half Goals Lead Denison Past Wilmington

September 7, 2005: The 16th ranked Big Red women’s soccer team scored four times in the first half and a trio of freshmen scored their first career goals as DU rolled to a 5-0 win over visiting Wilmington in non-conference soccer action from Granville.

Ashley FairhurstDenison senior All-American Colleen Wirtz struck first, putting DU on top just 5:48 seconds into the contest. The score would remain that way until first-year Ashley Fairhurst scored off a Meghan Polovick feed in the 23rd minute, giving the Big Red a 2-0 advantage.

Megan RounsevilleThirteen minutes later, Denison’s Lauren Going and Sarah Ash went back-to-back scoring goals separated by just 46 seconds to put the contest out of reach before the intermission. Senior Megan Rounseville added her first goal of the year late in the contest to round out the goal scoring for Denison. Fairhurst and Jessie Birdwhistell also added assists for DU.

Liz GilletteSophomore goalkeeper Liz Gillette earned her first shutout of the year, going all 90 minutes and recording seven saves. Denison attempted 17 shots compared to just four for the Quakers.

The Big Red improves to 2-1 on the year and will take their #16 ranking into this weekend’s Central Ohio Soccer Showcase. The four-team event features three of the nation’s top-25 teams and two unbeaten squads. Denison will try and hand #24 Otterbein their first setback of the season on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Delaware on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University. They will return on Sunday to face currently unbeaten Capital University at Columbus Crew Stadium at 10 a.m. Ohio Wesleyan will face Otterbein at 1 p.m. at Crew Stadium. Admission is free but donations will be accepted at the gate for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
