First Half Goal Stands up as Chicago Nips Big Red
September 4, 2005: The University of Chicago’s Sigrid Nachterbagye scored the contest’s lone goal in the 43rd minute off a cross from teammate Olivia Ndyabagye and managed to hang on for the 1-0 victory over the Big Red at Barclay-Thomsen Field on Sunday afternoon.
The contest featured the nation’s 14th ranked (Denison) and 15th ranked (Chicago) teams and despite controlling possession throughout the 90 minutes of play, DU found themselves on the short end as the final horn sounded.
The Maroons took only seven shots all day compared to 16 shots for the Big Red. Sophomore goalkeeper Liz Gillette finished the day with four saves while Chicago keeper, Amanda Sutter stopped five would-be goals, all in the first half.
The loss moves Denison’s record to 1-1 on the year. In fact, all four teams involved in this weekend’s annual Big Red-Battling Bishops tournament leave with a 1-1 record. Earlier in the day Nazareth upset sixth ranked Ohio Wesleyan, 2-1.
Denison’s next match will be on Wednesday, Sept. 7 when they host Wilmington College at 7:30 p.m.
