Denison Tops Nazareth in Double Overtime

Kim CochranSeptember 3, 2005: There must be something about a season opener that makes the Big Red just love to play a little extra. For the fourth consecutive season opening contest Denison played their opponent into double overtime as they walked away with a hard fought 2-1 victory over a physical Nazareth squad.

Denison sophomore Kim Cochran scored the game-winner off a corner kick served up by junior Anne Young in the 103rd minute of play to get the season off on the right foot for head coach Gail Murphy’s squad.

The Golden Flyers jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Julie Birbilis scored off a corner kick in the 26th minute. The Big Red responded less than a minute later with their first goal of the game thanks to a penalty kick by Young.

The two teams tied with 16 shots apiece. Denison attempted four corner kicks to Nazareth’s three and Big Red goalkeeper Liz Gillette finished with four saves while going the distance and picking up the victory.

In the second game of the Invitational, #6 Ohio Wesleyan defeated #15 Chicago, 2-1. The Big Red will take on the University of Chicago tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. at Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville. OWU will square off against Nazareth at 11 a.m. That game will also be played in Granville.
